What foods are poisonous
for my pet?
for my pet?
- Are there toxic foods for dogs and cats?
- Can certain foods be lethal to pets?
- Is chocolate dangerous for my dog?
Unfortunately, our furry friends can't enjoy all of the same tasty foods we have access to because it can seriously damage their health. Think of chocolate, for example. Our human taste buds love it (in moderation, anyway!), but if your dog or your cat, even other pets get their teeth into it, it won't be as pleasant... Chocolate is one of the many ingredients that can cause adverse effects to animals. Here is a non-exhaustive list of foods to put away from them.
*Always consult a veterinarian if you have any doubts about your pet's ingestion of dangerous food. Although we want to inform you as best we can to prevent accidents, unfortunately we cannot help you in an emergency. Calling your veterinary clinic for the advice of a technician is free and could save your best friend's life.
onion and garlic
Pay particular attention to the table foods you feed your pet. Onion and garlic are very often found in our dishes because they are tasty for us, but they destroy the red blood cells of animals, one of the main components of blood. Their ingestion can therefore quickly become dangerous for your dog or your cat as well as for other pets in the house.
Chocolate
The theobromine which is contained in chocolate stimulates the nervous and cardiac systems. In animals, the ingestion of chocolate leads to vomiting, diarrhea and cardiorespiratory disorders. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is.
Xylitol
This ingredient which is an agent used in sugar-free candy. Watch out for some peanut butter, which dogs love!
Coffee
The caffeine in coffee is dangerous in large amounts for your four-legged friend.
The alcohol
Even if we would sometimes like to share a little pina colada with our good old friend Fido, it's a very bad idea. Dogs need to be watched more than cats when it comes to ingesting alcohol, not because they like the resulting drunkenness, but because they are greedy and the sweet taste attracts them. Cats, more conservative, prefer to lap tap water, and that's fine, because alcohol quickly causes nausea, loss of balance, breathing difficulties, and in large quantities, death. Pay attention to fermented fruits, which also contain alcohol. It is therefore very important to close the bin tightly when throwing fruit away if your little one has a curious nose.
macadamia nuts
Ingestion of as few as 6 macadamia nuts can cause paralysis of the hind limbs, a marked increase in body temperature and an increase in heart rate.
Grapes in all forms
ingestion of grapes in pets can cause kidney failure which can be fatal.
