How to Clean CatIt Waterers

It is suggested to change the filters every 4 to 6 weeks in normal use. That is, if the fountain is placed in a room that gets dirty abnormally quickly. For example, if a fountain is placed in a place where wood is cut frequently, the filter will have to be changed more often because the environment is much dustier than normal.

The cleaning of the fountain (water retention tank, flower, water distribution cover, filter support plate), must also be done every 4 to 6 weeks at the same time as the filter change.

Pump cleaning is usually required annually. If a pump requires maintenance, it will give a few signs such as:

  • The pump no longer pushes the water with a good flow
  • The pump makes an abnormal noise, which is not due to lack of water.
  • If the pump does not work after cleaning, the pump transformer may be faulty. This piece is available for purchase by ordering it if not on store shelves

To complement your fountain purchase and to make it easier to clean, get the Catit cleaning kit.

The maintenance kit (44020) consists of two items for cleaning the Catit Waterer with Flower (43742W), the Catit Mini Waterer with Flower (43735W) and the Waterer with Stainless Steel Top (50023).

The kit includes a stiff bristle brush with a fine tip for reaching into tight spaces and a flower-shaped cleaning sponge with two textures and a wavy surface.

The two-piece maintenance kit for cleaning Catit waterers works in three ways:

Stiff bristle brush with thin tip gets into tight spaces.

The soft side of the flower-shaped cleaning sponge is ideal for delicate surfaces while the rough side is perfect for stubborn stains.

Why is there black sediment in my waterer?

The black sediment is actually activated carbon that has escaped from the filter. To prevent the release of black sediment, rinse the filter under running water for several minutes before installing it in the flower trough.

Which replacement filter should I use?

The flower trough requires a Triple Action Filter, which is sold in 2-packs, 5-packs, and 12-packs.

How can I reduce the noise generated by my waterer?

Make sure the surface you place the waterer on is sturdy and completely level. Place it on the floor and not on a table or counter. It should be noted that a wooden floor will naturally emit more noise than a concrete floor or tiles. Finally, be sure to fill the waterer up to the wavy line on the inside surface of the waterer, and clean the pump monthly. For cleaning the waterer and pump, it is recommended to use the Catit waterer cleaning kit. The stiff-bristled brush has a fine tip to reach tight spaces while the flower-shaped cleaning sponge features different textures for optimal cleaning.

How can I prevent my cat from dismantling the drinker?

The waterer with flower has been designed to be easy to disassemble for cleaning and for the safety of your cat. Since the components come apart relatively easily, your feline cannot break parts or knock over the water trough. Fortunately, cats' interest in dismantling the waterer tends to subside after doing it a few times.

How do I prevent my cat from overturning the water trough with flower?

Fill the trough up to the wavy line on the inside surface of the trough. A water trough filled to capacity will be nearly impossible for your cat to knock over.

Can I buy the waterer flower separately?

Waterer flower is special order only. It is currently not sold separately with retail packaging and it cannot fit any fountain not designed to accommodate this accessory.

Why is my filter floating?

The flower trough filter should be rinsed thoroughly and then submerged in a bucket of water before being inserted into the trough. If the filter continues to float, place it upside down in the waterer, which should prevent it from floating. After a few days, please return the filter to its normal position.

Why does the drinker filter turn orange?

The white mesh filter material of the drinker may turn orange due to iron particles in the activated carbon. If you notice significant orange discoloration, please replace the filter.

Why does the drinker filter turn reddish?

The bacterium Serratia marcescens could be the cause of this radiant hue. Although this bacterium is found in abundance in the environment, it nevertheless prefers damp places. If you notice such discoloration, please replace the filter and clean the water trough thoroughly. Avoid placing the waterer in a damp location, ensure the filter is submerged at all times, and avoid leaving the filter in the waterer when the power is off for an extended period of time.

How to prevent the formation of mold on the filter?

To prevent mold from forming on top of the filter, make sure it is submerged at all times. The water inside the flower trough should always reach the wavy line. Only turn the water trough off when performing maintenance or cleaning to ensure the filter is submerged at all times.
